Team Project: Play Soldier!

Engine: Unreal Engine 3          Game: Unreal Tournament 3 (base)

Build Time: 24 weeks

Play Soldier! is a third person shooter that combines crazy weapons and frenzied combat to create a feeling of fun, frenzied excitement for the player. Players control a plastic action figure being played with by a 6-year-old boy in his living room. Through the power of Billy's imagination, the action figure comes to life and it is up to the player to defeat the evil toys of big sister Bernice.

The unique hook in the game is the use of imagination. A living room is a boring place to play, so Billy imagines cardboard boxes sitting on the carpet turning into towering skyscrapers in a city under attack by the forces of girlitude.

My primary task as a level designer for Play Soldier! was the construction of one of three districts in Billy's city, themed around a specific enemy type. Additionally, I dabbled in some sound editing and cinematic construction, and also furthered my knowledge of Unreal Engine 3, learning about level streaming and sectioning along the way.

Team Project: Harvest

Engine: Unreal Engine 3          Game: Unreal Tournament 3 (base)

Build Time: 16 weeks

Harvest is a Unreal Tournament 3 modification that pits a band of humans against the unspeakable horrors that are trying to destroy their city. The Humans' must activate a series of steam nodes through each map to reactivate the lights throughout the city, while the Lurkers' goal is to slow the Humans down long enough to cause the coming of the Swarm.

This multiplayer modification features uneven teams of differing capabilities. The Humans, armed only with steam cannons, can do damage to the Lurkers if they work together but are much weaker than their dark foes. The Lurkers have several abilities that allow lightning-quick attacks, using their speed as both their offense and defense.

Team Project: Dr. Follybottom and the Stone of Xotl

Engine: Torque X with Torque X Platformer Kit

Build Time: 16 weeks

Dr. Follybottom and the Stone of Xotl is a 2-dimensional puzzle platformer game constructed using Torque X Builder. The player controls Dr. Follybottom, a Mr. Magoo-like explorer, as he attempts to recover the legendary Stone of Xotl from ancient South American ruins. Dr. Follybottom lacks any sort of attack or defense, but the player uses the huge Stone of Xotl to solve puzzles, break down doors, and shield themselves from natives.

This game features three levels, each with puzzles to complete, enemies to dodge, and traps to disable. It sets itself apart from other platformers because of its focus on 2-dimensional puzzle solving.

My primary responsibility as Lead Designer on Dr. Follybottom and the Stone of Xotl was guiding the construction of the game from start to finish. I wrote the majority of the documentation required for the game, ranging from the Game Design Documents all the way to the Asset and Development Plan. Additionally, as one of the Level Designers for Dr. Follybottom and the Stone of Xotl, I constructed the first level in the game. This level served as tutorial by gradually introducing such concepts as throwing switches, using pressure plates, and pushing the Stone down ramps to crash through walls.
