Modeling Buildings Using Rule Based Design and Shape Grammar in 3DS MAX

            Many games today have vast environments with many different types of buildings and structures in various states of decay that give the game much of its personality and atmosphere. Constructing these environments takes many man hours to design and build costing the developers time and money, the two most valuable resources any developer has. My project is designed to cut much of this time out of the equation, letting architecture modelers and artists produce more assets in a fraction of the time than they normally would.

My project will produce a script in 3DS MAX that will provide an interface to allow any user to choose architectural attributes and parameters desired to be built in 3DS MAX, and press a button to output  any number of architectural buildings that fit the users requirements. This gives a modeler near infinite models to choose from to use as a completed asset, or as a basis for asset construction. The result of this project will allow the user to save these completed models for use or future reference, and will have the ability to utilize any of these chosen models as input to output new architectural models derived from the selected input models. The output models will have a basic UV unwrap applied in a way that they can be used immediately if needed. There will be options in the script to include textures that the user wants to add to the model that will also be automatically applied.

This script will give the artist instant models that can be used to fill in many of the typical buildings used in his game in a few minutes rather than a few weeks. It can give the artist many different buildings that can be used to give an area of the games environment differently modeled buildings that still share a common theme. Development time is cut down in the general modeling stage giving the artist more time to polish and fine tune architecture enhancing the environment even more. Modeling can be streamlined allowing a smoother pipeline in applying similarly structured textures to different buildings.
