Shattered Glass

Game: Gears of War                                                

Engine: Unreal Engine 3

Development Time: Six Weeks

I created Shattered Glass, my first attempt at a Gears of War level.  Because it utilizes the Kryll as the primary enemy, I focused on making the dark areas inhabited by the Kryll and the bright, safe areas distinct for the player while maintaining an eerie atmosphere appropriate to this enemy and the environment.  Along with the lighting, I wanted to use meshes and textures to create a visually rich environment while giving the player choices within a tight space.

Brother and Sister Islet

Game: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion                                    

Engine: Gamebryo

Development Time: Six Weeks 

Brother and Sister Islet was a six week project for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.  During the project, I created a small world consisting of two islands.  In the village on Brother Islet, the player learns information about the ruins on Sister Islet and can receive a main quest and a side quest involving the ruins.  The two islands, the ruins, and the village allowed me to create several unique but connected environments within the scope of  a concise, main quest.

 

 

Let the Sun Shine

Game: Gears of War                                                 

Engine: Unreal Engine 3

Development Time: Sixteen Weeks

For Let the Sun Shine, I wanted to make an environment in Gears of War that had a distinctly unique feel.  Therefore, I decided to create a level inside a beachside spa or resort reminiscent of  a Roman bathhouse.  In order to accomplish the look, I used all existing Gears of War assets, but changed their appearance somewhat using the Unreal Material Editor.  I also used lighting and arrangement to create an airy world accented by the sharp shadows and light of the afternoon sun.

In the level, the player begins on a balcony overlooking a courtyard.  A seeder waits in a pool below the player.  The player must circle through the building to reach the controls to the closed skylight above the seeder.  Once the skylight is opened the player can use the Hammer of Dawn to destroy it.

 

 

Master's Thesis Project

Gears of War Environments

This gallery consists of images from two Gears of War projects that I constructed for one of my level design classes.  I developed each of these projects over a one week period.  The projects consist of a small space, one an interior and the other an exterior, without gameplay but with a focus on high visual detail.
