From Sun Up Till Sun Beatdown

Engine: Unreal Engine 3          Game: Gears of War

Build Time: 8 weeks

I combined the threat of the kryll with the threat of a setting sun on a timed level. As the sun sets, the kryll’s dominance over the map increases and forces the player forward. This goes hand-in-hand with the player’s ultimate goal of moving towards the rescue helicopter. Along the way, the Locust army wants a piece of the player and constantly bears down, attempting to impede forward progress.

Mood and Environment

Engine: Unreal Engine 3          Game: Gears of War

Build Time: Interior = 2 weeks     Exterior = 2 weeks     Natural = 1 week

This is a compilation of three environmental scenes. The goal of each was strictly visual; no gameplay is present. Learning how to use assets and place them was critical to these assignments. Constructing an interesting scene with lots of intrigue is what I focused on for each project. There is an interior space, outdoor space, and a natural space.

The Great Antlion Escape

Engine: Source Engine          Game: Half-Life 2: Episode 2

Build Time: 4 weeks

After gaining more experience with the Source Engine, I expanded my efforts to a mini-level dealing heavily with antlions. Along with pushing my scripting potential, I experimented with Faceposer. The end result is a fun puzzle that provides the player with solid hints. This mini-level would fit perfectly inside a larger campaign and functions on its own as a great exercise in thinking "outside-the-box" that is typical Half-Life gameplay.

Around the Horn (DM-17)

Engine: Unreal Engine 3          Game: Unreal Tournament III Multiplayer

Build Time: 3 1/2 weeks

The highlight of my multiplayer map making at The Guildhall is this version of the popular DM-17 map.  My take on it involves floating land masses attached to the ground with giant suspension chains. Players fly around the level using the jump pads provided to reach the different platforms. The one large difference is the set of jump pads that circle around the large platform in the middle. Once a player begins the "Around the Horn" sequence, they embark on a rail ride around the level, taking pot shots at all of their opponents.

The Farmer's Debt

Engine: Gamebryo          Game: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Build Time: 6 weeks

This level takes place in a cave just outside the city of Cheydinhal. Once the player is famous enough, an NPC recognizes and approaches the player within the city of Cheydinhal. The NPC directs the player to Fargonia where the quest begins to help a struggling family and overthrow an evil village ruler.

Subway Set Design

Engine: Source Engine         Game: Half-Life 2: Episode 2

Build Time: 1 week

The scene is a visual piece. The assignment was to focus on setting up a scene using assets from the desired engine. Believability was important, as was intriguing additions to make viewers wonder what the story is behind the area.
