Concepting Culture

For my Thesis I was determined to develop a thought process in which an artist could create concept art for various characters, environments or overall settings. The goal was to create a workflow that uses cultural norms and artifacts to create a compelling and believable conceptual piece as the final product.  In undergrad I spent a lot of academic energy in archeological and artistic ventures. I found it interesting when artist used and/or created culture to make concept art.

For me I felt that this was a door into creating more believable worlds for the viewer, thus sparking the imagination. One of the most challenging things in this project was the overall process. In archeology often times we find the artifacts of a culture and from that we try to determine how the people lived their lives. For this project I essentially set out to do the opposite of that, which is to say, determine how the people live, and then derive the artifacts that make them appear in the way that they do. Once I had nailed down the process, the act of thinking up artifacts became much more fluid and thought out. I hope that others can use this technique to create compelling and believable pieces of artwork.
