Graphics vs. Gameplay: Multiplayer Games

As graphics improve, they become an even more integral and essential element of today’s games. When developers combine an appealing aesthetic experience with the social experience found in today’s standard multiplayer games (Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch), the past has shown that the outcome is virtually always success. Because of this, this thesis tests the hypothesis that graphics, in today’s multiplayer games, are more important than gameplay features. This thesis proposes that amazing graphics can supplant the need for innovative gameplay.
This thesis is also comprised of two variations of the same Capture the Flag map, both of which take place on a Pier over the Pacific Ocean. The first variation has far superior aesthetic and visual quality and relies on the enjoyable gameplay elements inherent to the Multiplayer Capture the Flag game type. The second variation of the map has some of the same visual themes and structures, but lacks the visual quality of the first level; however, this level emphasizes flow and design with alternate routes and gameplay features.
This thesis also tests this theory by analyzing the sales figures and reviews of some the top games released in the past year. This thesis uses this data to determine if a correlation exists between the presence of superior graphics combined with a multiplayer experience and the success of a game in today’s market.
This thesis and project produced different results as to what is more important in games today: Graphics or Gameplay. The industry analysis showed that the best formula for creating a successful game in the current market is to rely heavily on the proven multiplayer experience and use the marketability of stunning visuals to sell your game. The results of the survey; however, showed that players prefer good gameplay over impressive visuals in the multiplayer environment.
