Art Creation Portfolio Requirements
Labeling instructions:
All submissions must have your name and Guildhall application system ID number prominently displayed. Digital media should be clearly labeled on the outside and should also contain a README text file (or MS Word file) with your name, Guildhall application system ID number, and a list of the contents.
Art Creation applicants must complete the following:
1. Assignment:
Please contact Rene’ Archambault at rarchamb@smu.edu or by phone at 972.473.3539 to request a sketchbook to be mailed to you for this portion of the application. We prefer that you use The Guildhall at SMU sketchbook, however; if you have already begun the assignment, please do try to limit the size of your sketchbook to 5” by 7” in size. Fill the book with a minimum of the following twelve (12) examples of your artwork over the next few weeks, including basic sketches as well as a few more fully realized sketches addressing:
- Figure poses/life drawings (3)
- Portraits (4)
- include front, side, and ? views, male and female subjects, and one creature
- Architectural or environment drawings (2)
- A large animal, such as a horse or large cat (1)
- Conceptual art to show your imagination on a unique character for a movie or digital game (1)
- include a drawing of the character and illustrations of where the character lives)
- A graphic/commercial art example such as a logo, ad or banner (1)
Note:
Exercises copied from art instruction books or from the work of other artists are not appropriate for this assignment. Drawing from direct observation is critical, do not copy photos. Submit only one sketchbook and include dates on each drawing page. The more the better.
2. Other Art Examples:
Submit at least 10 examples of your other art work either in digital format or in slide format. At least two examples of your art work must be in color.
If submitting digital files, include a README text file (or MS Word document) explaining the contents of the files as follows. If submitting slides, label each slide as follows:
- Artist's name
- Guildhall application system ID number (issued to you by The Guildhall at SMU)
- Date of execution for the art work
- Dimensions
- Medium (watercolor, charcoal, sculpture, etc.)
Note:
Your "other" art examples should be balanced between traditional representational works and works drawn from the imagination. We are particularly interested in examples of art work done to satisfy your passion to create art outside of the classroom.
- Accepted file formats for still images are: JPEG, GIF, PNG, TGA, TIFF
- Accepted file formats for movie clips are: MOV, QT, AVI, MPEG-1
- Accepted archiving formats are: ZIP, TAR.GZ, TGZ
Note:
You application will NOT be reviewed until all non-optional elements on this list have been received.
